Further information. Paylater option creates record and good on screen thank you message. Using PayPal produces no record and on screen thank you message is missing event name and uses current date instead of event date.

"Thank you for registering for on Jan 25, 2011! "

I am running Joomla 1.5.22. New site. Only extensions installed are DT Register, Akeeba Backup, and CK Editor.

It seems that the IPN functionality is broken - the basic routing and sending the price and event name TO PayPal works - but nothing comes back FROM PayPal...
