When I select a category for an event (either a custom category, root or none), the event disappears from the events listing and the calendar.

Category is definitely published.

Same problem on two different installs

First, do not ever select Root or None.

Second, if you see Root as an option, that tells me you need to update.

Third, you need to open and re-save categories. The access level of your categories is either not saved or set correctly. Set it to Public if you want everyone to see those events.

I'm using version 3.0.5a - by the looks of it, I should be on 3.0.5. I'm using Joomla 3.1 - it's not telling me to upgrade.

Do I just need to reinstall the main component?

thanks

The current build is 3.0.5c. It's not going to tell you to upgrade DT Register within the Joomla control panel. You can download the package from My Orders as that will always have the latest build inside. Just reinstall it. No data is lost... but all files are replaced.

There were legitimate category problems with releases PRIOR to 3.0.5, but they've all been resolved with the initial 3.0.5 release. The following minor updates have contained some other small bug fixes, but not category related.

I've upgraded to 3.0.5c and I can still see 'root' in existing categories and events and when I create a new category.

All events initially disappeared from the Upcoming Events listing.
If I select a category for an existing event they now appear
If I select None they don't

Please advise

thanks
