{dtregister}37{/dtregister} plugin would check the registration status of current user against the displayed event and display "You are registered" where this would be true instead of always showing Register Now.

Having Duplicate Registration Prevention option per event would be nice too.

I second that. The plugin should display "You are registered" instead of "Register Now!" and when the button is clicked, it should take the user to Edit their registration.
