Module Request: Number of Registrants

I would like to make a simple module that would show the number of registrants (attendees for an event). The module would just show the event title and in a large font the number of people signed-up.

I have all the time people asking me how many have sign-up and even though there are two places they can see for themselves (attendee list and on the event list screen). I thought this might be an is module to create if I had a little guidance .

On a side note - the event list screen which has a list of events and shows the number of attendees is off by 3. So for example on the backend and on the attendee list it shows 81 (if you count them), but on the event list screen it has 79. Any idea where I go to fix this?
