TOPIC: We Need Variable Calendar Component Support

Perhaps a future version of DT Register (Native Joomla 1.5+) could be designed to use a separate calendar connector component that would allow using different event calendars by simply setting a configuration element in the admin interface.

For example you could have connector components for JEvents, Eventlist, JCalPro and any others as demand dictates. I\'m sure the hardest part would be for DT Register to recognize if there are DT Register features that a particular calendar component doesn\'t support. For this the connector could make automatic configurations to DT Register in order to activate/deactivate features.

I believe by moving to a calendar connector strategy that DT Register improvements would no longer be completely hardwired to a single calendar component developer\'s release cycle. For example, waiting for JEvents before native J1.5 support can be completed (I\'ve been waiting a long time). Should a new version of a calendar change their database structure, only the connector would need to be updated to make DT Register compatible.

As long as site admins know what they can expect from each connector component, they can make an informed decision concerning which Calendar to use (free or paid). In fact you could also make a connector using the Google Calendar API and allow site admins to not even host their own calendar system.

By working with multiple calendar developers DT Register can possibly influence the direction the calendar developers take and might even give them additional motivation to provide superlative components.
