Most of the time, I want to link the user directly from the menu to the reg form rather that the full event list. I know that this can be done with external URL, but it would open up some styling and ACL options to have a component driven menu assignment for a single event.

This functionality has been there for a long time. The new release just fixed it in the Joomla 3.x version as it had a bug in the previous version.
