An event was set up as a public event. For some reason it is listed as a private event and requiring people to log on. Any suggestions as to why this will not save as a public event?

Are you sure the event is still saved as private? If save is not working, then you have a required element not set... which would include: event title, admin notification email address, start date/time, end date/time. The first tab would show any of these items as not set (not validated) when you try to save if they are not there or valid.

There ARE two other items that could make a public event ACT like a private event. If the event has any prerequisite events or prerequisite categories selected, it will force a login. Also, if Overlapping Event Check is enabled in the DT Reg configuration, ALL events will require a login.
