I have a user group call XXX.

People are auto assigned to this group.

However when logged in they cannot see events in either the event list component or the upcoming events module.

I have synced the users and they show up in the dt_register permissions list.

The user can see everything else on the site. Just not the dt-register events.

Any ideas?

I should add - the user gorup is a child of "registered"

I changed the users group to registered to check if there was an issue with my custom group.

Same issue.

I logged in with my super-user account - again the same issue.

Being able to view events in the component list or the modules has nothing to do with DT Register Permissions. Those permissions are only for administrative functions.

If users can't SEE events, it's one reason... access level. This falls to the category that the events are in. If you want everyone to see the events, the category should be set to "Public" (not "Guest"). If you want just your users of a certain group to see the events, then set the access level of the category appropriately.
