I have a team based event and am trying to figure out how to clean it up. Essentially, I would expect the team captain to register his boat and the team members ( from 2 to 6 members). The current group sign up option asks for each team members info and then asks essentially the same info for the team itself. I would love to modify the group fields to include custom fields such as Boat Make, Boat Model, Do you want ice for 10bucks?, do you want bait for 10 bucks etc as this information is only relevant to the team as a whole as the entry is per boat not team member. Another option would be to have the Captain register and have the crew members register separately but sign up for their respective captains boat or team name. Any ideas?

You have full control over which fields are given (and required) for each member in the group, and separately for the final billing page for the group. Go to Configuration -> Fields. Then for each event you can also designate how custom fields are used. Regarding group registrations, you can say: Use for Each member in the group, billing page only, BOTH members and billing, or None.
