Yes you first need to uninstall the old version.
Then install the new version.

Data will NOT be gone ! So you don't have to worry to loose data.

FYI:
Only thing is that if you have in your menu options linked to a category of events. You need to open that menu item and save again. Otherwise the link is not working.
