I am very scared and uncomfortable with repeating events EDITING.
I can't touch them because I will lose all my existing registrant information.
This makes repeating events dangerous and unusable.

If I have an event that repeats once a month:
Jan, Feb, Mar....Dec

Now it's March and I decide to update the event.
It warns me that

Are you sure you want to apply these changes? If you do, the existing repeats will be deleted and new ones created. This will generate new event IDs for the new repeats.

This is nuts, I will lose all Jan/Feb data and may lose any registrations from future events.

Why is this like this? Can we not edit something and retain the records associated with those events? Why totally new IDs?

Thanks

That's why this was modified recently. If you have the latest package, you will find (as announced in the forum release details) that now editing a repeat event does NOT delete and re-create the repeats... therefore no records would be lost. The ONLY way repeats are re-created with new IDs is if you change the repeat settings. For example, you change the repeat to Mondays instead of Tuesdays. Then the repeats are dropped and re-created. Then, yes, existing records could be lost.

So, get updated and you'll find this works much better than previous versions.

Ok well I guess I did change the repeat settings.
I saw the warning but still it's a tough pill to swallow to lose registrations.
Is there no way to edit the repeat info and still retain the registration records?

It seems to me that software should never be allowed to destroy / lose data. There should at least be an option like - "Create csv export of records about to be deleted" or something like that, even though that is kludgy at best.

Just a thought

Records are not actually deleted. What happens is changing the repeat settings causes the repeat events to be RE-CREATED with new IDs. The old records are associated to the old ID. So they still exist, just are assigned to an old ID that no longer is used in the event system so they don't show anywhere.

If you have existing records, you shouldn't re-create the repeat events. You can delete/unpublish unwanted repeats or make changes to existing ones. If you need more repeats, just create a new batch for the new ones. That would be best.

If you have a number of records that you "lost", then you'll need to grab them in the database. Go to those records and update the associated event ID number... like "take all records with event ID 7 and change them all to event ID 15" basically. Not ideal, but at least now you know for next time.
