With all of the recent upgrades, one of the things that has been driving me crazy is changing the language file every time.

We have a small company that only does business in one province in Canada. Therefore we customize the language file to only show that province and only Canada. It makes the application faster to use for registrations and friendlier for our customers.

The problem is, every time I upgrade (which is often these days!!), I have to install, use FTP to grab the language file, find all the entries to edit in the file and then FTP it back. It is becoming tiresome.

Is there any way that you can merge the two files (current and new) to create a language file with the edits from the old one with any new features being released in the latest one? I have delayed upgrading beyond 2.7.1 I think it is as I am tired of doing this!

The Language Translation Override extension solves the issue of language overrides for Joomla 1.5 http://extensions.joomla.org/extensions/languages/language-edition/13147

Not familiar with that other extension, but sounds like something to check out. However, every update adds new language tags to the bottom of the new language file, commented accordingly. So all you need to do is grab the new items and add them to the bottom of your old language file. You don't have to re-apply changes.
