Technically it is possible to upgrade a 2.5 site to a 3.x site all within one installation... as opposed to a full migration. This has turned out to be not as smooth as Joomla sold the 2.5 to 3 move. It is recommended to build a separate J3 site and migrate data from the 2.5 to the 3. It works much better overall... not just talking DT Register, but everything. Many extensions will require that for a migration. Mosets Tree, for example, requires a separate site migration from 1.5 to 2.5, then again from 2.5 to 3. Anyway...

So, to be clear, you have just upgraded your 2.5 site to 3.6.4, right where it already sat. No separate install at all? No separate database?

What exact package of DT Register are you trying to install?

Thanks for helping! Yes - I did an internal upgrade from 2.5.28 to 3.6.4 with no separate install. Everything works well following the upgrade except DT Register. We have about three years of records we hope to preserve and continue to use it to register events.

The version we have is: com_dtregister3_0_0_J30.zip

Is there anything I can adjust manually in J3 to help the installation?

>>>
UPDATE:
I manually removed the record from the DB that would not delete through Joomla extension manager. I tried another install with fingers crossed but still get this error:

"

OH MY!! That's the reason why we ask questions like "what version"... because sometimes people are tying to use something that is 3 1/2 years old in a current environment. Uh... it's not going to work.

You need the very latest DT Register, which is 3.1.11 to have any luck within Joomla 3.6. Download it from My Orders, but based on how old of a package you're trying to install... I'm doubting you even have a current license. If you have no download link, you'll need to purchase a new license.

You never answered... what version of DT Register were you running in Joomla 2.5? That is important.

I think I had version 2.8.4 in my J 2.5 site.

Well that's another problem then. You have to upgrade to the latest build for 2.5 FIRST. Just like the J3 build you were trying to use... 2.8.4 is nearly 4 years old. You can't assume that there are no database and structural changes since then and just pull ancient data into a new framework. Any Joomla migration instruction would tell you to upgrade all extensions to the latest version for 2.5 before migrating.

What you need to do is restore your 2.5 DT Register data... upgrade it to 2.8.18... then migrate that to the J3 site. Not sure what your best route is to accomplish this, but you have essentially made a bit of a mess in not doing it correctly to start. There's no quick fix to pull out of that. Since you've already upgraded the entire site and have no 2.5 environment behind (since you did it on the one install), that makes it more challenging for you. If you do not have a 2.5 environment setup, you'll need to create one. Put your old 2.5 data in place for DT Register and install the version you've been running. Then follow upgrade instructions to get it to 2.8.18. Then you can export that data and import it into your new database... which should be completely cleared of any DT Register data first.

I get it. I have a full J 2.5.28 backup that I can restore to a sub-directory to perform the DT Register update with the newest version DT 2.8.18. Then I'll get the J3 site with the latest DT version for 3. Then will export and import the data.
