Well, I tried this and it doesn't appear to work on my site. Oh well, AMM worked okay and gave me even more control (like making the module appear when you get to the event from the event list instead of a direct link that's also in a menu)

I'm struggling with this too. You can see here the External Menu item I've set up.
http://spaclique.com/spaliday-iexpo-home.html

This is set up with the following. I've tried various iterations of this with no luck. Joomla seems to strip the &itemID= elemet
http://www.spaclique.com/index.php?option=com_dtregister&itemID=201188&eventId=112&controller=event&task=Register

Can you sugest the best way to add a menu item that will not return to the default template?

You should first turn off SEF URLs before copying the URL you'd like the External Link to point to. Then you can go to Menu Manager and create the External Link. When creating that external link, once you click "apply" an item ID is assigned for the menu item. Add ""&Itemid=123" to the External Link URL(changing 123 to the item ID of the menu item). You can then assign a module or alternate template to that menu item. When done, switch SEF URLs back on.

I've done it on several J1.5 sites and it worked without a hitch.

bscunningham - also, case does matter. In the url you gave here, you had "itemID=" where it should be "Itemid=".

Can you elaborate on how you are assigning an alternative template or module to the id. I can't get that to work, but I think it may be what I am looking for. Trying to create standalone event reg pages with custom header and footer.
