TOPIC: Joomla 1.7 Support

Hi Bruce, DTH stated in the notes to their latest release (or was it a reply to one of my posts - can't remember) that they plan to put out a 1.6 version first and then a 1.7 version 'soon after'....

HOWEVER I was thinking, my guess is 100% of Joomla 1.6 users are going straight to 1.7 as it's (a) uncomplicated and (b) necessary for security reasons!!!!

So perhaps DTH you could change plan and save the effort of packaging up a 1.6 version - just go straight to 1.7 even if it takes a little longer....

To see if this is justified could all 1.6 / 1.7 users respond to this post to state their preference:

1) Have a Joomla 1.6 compatible version of DT Reg before the 1.7
2) Just go straight to 1.7 compatibility....

My vote is 100% for 1.7 and ignore 1.6 now as it's close to end of life.....

So if it's just my vote, I say please skip 1.6 and go straight to a 1.7 version - No one should really be on 1.6 now as it is in its final days of supported existence!

Any update in general on the J1.7 version?

You had no reply from DT Register users as you had replied to this post in a DT DONATE forum category. I have now split the two posts.

To reply... not going to skip 1.6. Whether they should or not, many people are still using 1.6 and will realistically continue. Our 1.6 version will be out later this week. We'll then do some hopefully quick testing and any tweaks needed for 1.7. Hoping to have very little to do at that point.

As sad as it is... some people are still on Joomla 1.0. We still get contacts about it, although not as often. Once our 1.6 is out, the 1.0 version will no longer be available to anyone. The point is, that while everyone should always update to the latest Joomla version, quite a lot of them do not. So we need to cover all the bases.

Oh yes I know about the dinosaurs problem.... Most of my clientele are using Internet Explorer 6.... I'm not even going to ask if you test to that - I wouldn't expect you to, or want you to!

Good call, Nathan. 1.6 needs to be supported now rather than wait.

Just a brief perusal of extensions.joomla.org shows that as of 8/4/11, here is the count for version-compatible releases:

Joomla 1.5: 7499 extensions
Joomla 1.6: 2398 extensions
Joomla 1.7: 1083 extensions

Yes, the newer version is essentially better, but it's just the nature of the process that the extensions will appear later in the life cycle of the product, thus making the older versions effectively more functional until the development cycle catches up.

So, can't wait for that 1.6 version. I have a conference to start registering next week!

Joomla 1.6 hits end of life in exactly 1 week now and the official line is everyone should be moved from 1.6 to 1.7 by then.... With still no sign of a DT Reg 1.6 please can we save time in the long run and go straight to 1.7 with the next release???
