any hack I can use to turn that off? I'd rather use my own and that has always caused me problems since I like to set the User Panel menu item to registered but also let the public register. If anything, maybe add an option to do that automatically or not.

You can have multiple DT Register menu items already. That is how the joomlaeventregistration.com demo site is setup. There is the main public listing menu item. Then category menu items... then a "registered" menu item for the user panel. So you could assign different modules to each category and such. You just can't assign an Itemid from another component. There's already many options, but we'll consider other options for customizing further.

I never did figure this out for my site. Not sure if it's because I'm using RocketTheme's newest template or not (there are some settings for ItemID that I turned on and off in their admin with no results)...

I ended up just using Advanced Module Manager and got it working that way.
