This has been tossed around previously but I thought I would revive the subject to see what responses are forthcoming.
OK... The aim of this post is to determine if it is possible to create barcoded tickets for events that would be unique to each registrant. Ideally, these tickets would then pass through a barcode scanner at the event and the software would then confirm the ID of the 'entrant' and mark that registrant as registered in the database.
I can see a number of benefits. e.g. I believe it would stop/deter copies of tickets and instantly identify the registrant.
Also it would immediately identify those who registered as paying at the door so monies could be collected.
A report could be generated at any stage to determine arrival numbers as well as any other statistic required for the event.
So to that end is it then possible or viable to do something like the following:-
1. DT register already creates unique IDs in the database against the registrant when someone registers. How difficult would it be to create a corresponding barcode that is derived from and or associated with that unique ID?
2. Perhaps use an existing Joomla barcode component or snippit to create these derived barcodes. (

)
3. Have the option to use those barcodes when creating your tickets either locally or from the backend. (We have a 'Zebra' card printer and currently send out registrants tickets that way.)
4. Create a software interface that does the scan recognition and 'checkoff' in the database 'at the door'. Perhaps do a compare function with the ID number created on registration with the bar code number generated 'at the door'. (See footnote below)
Am I asking too much?
Footnote: Don't know if this helps or not but -I have a basic hand scanner (DLC6065-M0) that reads barcodes 'out of the box'. i.e. I can open Word or Excel (for example) and then when I scan a barcode, it immediatly recognises the code and plugs the derived number into the document or spreadsheet and does a line feed. No extra software required. The scanner simply plugs into a USB port.
