TOPIC: Order of fields

The events at our center vary a lot; we often need to create fields which are specific to just one event.
As each field is created, it goes at the end of the list of fields, and has to be moved up to the desired position in the order of fields.
After creating several events with several custom fields each, it becomes quite cumbersome to move new fields up into the position I want.
I had hoped that I could simply change the number on a field, and the others would re-adjust themselves, but I have found no joy with that approach.

Can anyone suggest another approach?
